The Kukke Subrahmanya Matha is renowned for housing the revered and powerful Samputa. This Samputa has a significant history that traces back to Jagadguru Sri Madhwacharya's journey to the Himalayas. There, under the guidance of the great sage Sri Ved Vyas, Sri Madhwacharya received 8 Vyasa Mushti Saligrams. He took 5 of these, along with 144 Lakshmi Narayana Saligrams and 1 Lakshmi Narasimha Saligram, and enclosed them within a Samputa. This very Samputa came to be known as the Narasimha Samputa. It is said that Sri Madhwacharya held the Samputa in such reverence that scriptures referred to it as his "heart."
During the time when Sri Aniruddha Theertharu served as the first pontiff of this Matha, an event occurred involving the local king, Ballalraaya. The king attempted to destroy the Samputa by placing it under the feet of an elephant. However, instead of the Samputa breaking, the elephant immediately perished. Deeply remorseful, the king recognized his grave mistake and donated his wealth to the Matha in atonement.
Sri Madhwacharya initiated his brother, Sri Vishnu Theertharu, into Sanyasa and made him the head of the Matha. Sri Vishnu Theertharu entrusted the Matha with several sacred items, including the Samputa Narasimha, Vyaasa Mushti, Vithala and Rukmini, Satyabhama, and a smiling Lakshmi Narasimha. It is believed by many that Sri Vishnu Theertharu continues his prayers and penance at Siddha Parvatha, as no one has been able to locate his brindavana. Additionally, it is said that Sri Vishnu Theertharu initially carried the Samputa with him, but later, at the request of Sri Aniruddha Theertharu, he sent it back to the Matha via the Kumara Dhaara River.
The Kukke Subrahmanya Matha's unique distinction lies in the presence of the powerful Samputa. This Samputa, which was given to Sri Madhwacharya by Sri Ved Vyas, contains sacred saligrams and is venerated as his "heart." The legend of its significance is marked by an episode with King Ballalraaya, who, in his attempt to destroy the Samputa, witnessed the death of an elephant instead. In deep regret, the king donated his wealth to the Matha.
